This fossil belongs to stromatoporoid sponges. They are colonial beings with calcified domes or stratified structures, which created and added to ancient coral reefs. It is not clear if this is a monophyletic group but it is often classified as such for species aged Ordivician through the Devonian. Despite this, we know they belong to Sclerospongiae. Members of Sclerospongiae have bodies of calcium carbonate, silica and spongin, and are commonly found in conjunction with the coral reefs.
